Polyvagal Theory: the science of feeling safe

Polyvagal Theory, developed by world renowned scientist Dr. Stephen Porges, posits that the human nervous system has three distinct branches (the parasympathetic, sympathetic, and a unique branch of the parasympathetic nervous system called your social engagement system) that respond to stress in different ways, influencing our social behavior, emotional regulation, and the ability to connect with others. It emphasizes how our sense of safety is governed by subconscious signals in our environment and the critical role of the vagus nerve in mediating our physiological state in response to these signals. It highlights how these systems interact to shape our responses to safety and danger, fundamentally affecting our ability to connect with others and manage stress.

Safe and Sound Protocol

Developed by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a five hour, research based, auditory intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience. Based on Dr. Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, the SSP exerts a calming effect on our physiological and emotional state. This opens the door for improved healing, communication and social ease. How does it work?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) involves listening to specially filtered music through headphones alongside a provider, in-person or remotely. The SSP functions through specially filtered music, resetting the subconscious (autonomic) nervous system to help shift away from defensive survival responses such as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. This encourages a balanced interaction between the brain and body, promoting a physiological state conducive to relaxation, self regulation, social connection, and resilience. Users experience this transformative process through over-ear headphones, gradually exposing the auditory system to different sound frequencies.

There is a popular vocal music playlist and a non-vocal classical music playlist, both with the same special filtering, you can choose between the two playlists. The volume and clarity of the music varies with the specific filtering and is pleasant to listen to.

Comprising three pathways—Connect, Core, and Balance—the full SSP protocol offers a comprehensive approach to enhancing well-being, each with 5 hours of listening.

  • SSP Connect offers a slow and gentle way to approach SSP and allows you time to adjust and acclimate to the listening and to prepare for SSP Core.

  • SSP Core is filtered music. It is the existing, original SSP that has been used by thousands of providers and tens of thousands of clients since its release in 2017. It is designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience.

  • SSP Balance offers an integrating experience and the opportunity to extend the state-regulating benefits beyond SSP Core.

You can learn more about the three pathways and available playlists here.

Somatic Experiencing and SSP

The SSP is not intended to do on your own entirely and without an attuned provider to help guide you int he process and help you track how your system reacts. Somatic Experiencing is integrated into your sessions for the best results and can also help with building our window of tolerance and capacity..

Regulation through Music + Connection

Want to take a deeper dive and learn if Safe and Sound Protocol is right for you?

The Safe and Sound Protocol acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to re-tune your nervous system to better support connection, collaboration, and resilience.

  • The SSP is a research-based therapy showing significant results in the following areas:

    • Social and emotional difficulties

    • Auditory sensitivities

    • Anxiety and trauma related challenges

    • Inattention

    • Stressors that impact social engagement

    • Internal agitation, irritability and reactivity

    • Those on the Autism Spectrum

    • Those with physical conditions exacerbated by stress

  • Overall, most people seeking the Safe and Sound protocol are looking for help with:

    • Unresolved trauma (even transgenerational and developmental)

    • Chronic health issues (long-covid, POTS, chronic pain, chronic fatigue)

    • Attachment wounds and relational trauma

    • Anxiety

    • sensory processing difficulties

    • ADD/ADHD and autism spectrum challenges

    • “Complex kids” (foster and adoptive parents, mystery symptoms, challenging behaviors)

  • Typically 3-4 weeks with about 20 minutes of listening per day, or every other day.

While there is no hard and fast set time for completing the SSP, rushing through the process is defintley not recommended. When re-tuning our nervous system towards safety, allowing for plenty of time to integrate is critical. Rushing to get to the end sooner rather than later will not ensure quicker gains or a different outcome. Slow and steady!

In the past, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) was a 5-day listening program. And while it can still be done in this way, the “old way”—by completing an hour a day of listening—many trauma-informed practitioners like myself are cautious because the old method may result in more unwanted outcomes and side effects. And that is why I like to go at a pace that works for the individual. This is determined during our first initial session. Typically people dont have a lot of down time to rest and integrate after sesions, so spacing them out helps to not overwhelm our system.

  • We will arrange a time to talk and pick a starting day for you to begin SSP - typically a time when you have a little less going on.

Now available by remote delivery via a downloadable app. All you need is a set of over the ear headphones or Bluetooth headphones that are not noise cancelling (or that feature can be turned off). If you are local you are welcome to come into the office.

  • $450/adults $275/children

Once you have completed one round of SSP you may repeat the program for $150 after 6-8 weeks if needed.

Includes 2 sessions together, access to the app for 2 months, one round of SSP Core and text, email, phone support.

Additional support is done through Somatic Experiencing sessions (in person or remote) and craniosacral sessions (in person) at $115 an hour.

Adults

We will have an initial session where we explore what you are looking for from the program and how I can best support you. Together, we will explore the patterns of your individual nervous system and how it adapts to life so that you will be fully prepared to recognize how SSP is affecting you. We will also go over the mechanics of how to use the app, when and where to listen, what to expect, and answer any questions that you have.

Our next session is where we will begin the listening. We will be tracking what you are noticing in your body and emotions as you listen.

You may listen for up to 30 minutes or perhaps much less, depending on how the music is affecting you. We will be looking for the “just right” amount for your nervous system. From here we will decide how best to proceed. Some people may then complete some listening on their own before we meet up again around hour 3 of the program. We will also meet during hour 5 and at that point will discuss next steps. For some people, particularly in cases of trauma, I recommend working more closely together and adding sessions of Somatic Experiencing in order to support what may emerge as part of the listening process. These sessions are billed separately. Throughout the program I am available to you as needed via text, phone, email or zoom.

Children

For children, the safest way to experience the program is usually in the company of their parents or caregivers. Because of this I offer the program a little differently for them than for adults. I will initially meet with you, the parents or caregivers, to gain an understanding of your child and the challenges they may be facing. Then I will orient you to the program, teaching you how to administer it and what to look out for. We discuss how often, how much, when and where to listen. The actual listening is done with you as the safe presence in your home. We will maintain close contact via zoom, phone, email or text to support you and adjust the program as needed.

SSP can create a wide variety of responses. I am quick to recognize signs of dysregulation, particularly because of my training in Somatic Experiencing and can help you return to a state of balance so that your journey with SSP can be smooth and enjoyable. This is also why we do the first few sessions typically together to see how you respond and how much you need.

The Science Behind the Polyvagal Theory: The Vagus Nerve

The mind and body are connected through the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, stretching from the brainstem to the colon. It is our internal control center, allowing the brain to monitor and receive information about many of our bodily functions.

The vagus nerve helps to regulate critical aspects of human physiology, including the heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, digestion and even speaking. As the body takes in information automatically through neuroception, the vagus nerve communicates this information to the brain, which processes the signals and cues from the world around us and in turn determines how we react through three physiological states: Parasympathetic/ventral vagal state, sympathetic state, or dorsal vagal state.

Neuroplasticity

The ability of the brain to change in response to stimulation is known as “neuroplasticity.” The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)and Focus System are based on this principle, providing gentle and specific stimulation in order to activate the neural pathways used in the processing of sensory information.

Neural connections in these pathways are strengthened and new connections are established through repeated sessions of multisensory input, allowing the nervous system to adapt and find safety more quickly and easily.

Being in Ventral Vagal - Parasympathetic

At the top of the autonomic hierarchy, is the system of connection. The ventral state is essential for health and wellbeing. In this state, we feel grounded, organized, and ready to meet the day. Life feels manageable; we see options, have hope, and hear new stories. We connect to ourselves, to others, to the world around us, and to Spirit. We are regulated and ready to engage. Our heart rate is regulated and our breath is full. We take in the faces of friends, tune in to conversations, and tune out distracting noises. We see the big picture and connect to the world and the people in it. I might describe myself as happy, active, interested and the world as safe, fun, and peaceful.

From this ventral vagal place at the top of the autonomic ladder, I am connected to myself and can reach out to others. Some of the daily living experiences in this state include being organized, following through with plans, taking care of myself, taking time to play, doing things with others, feeling productive at work, and having a general feeling of regulation and a sense of management. Health benefits include a healthy heart, regulated blood pressure, a strong immune system decreasing my vulnerability to illness, good digestion, quality sleep, and an overall sense of well-being.

I serve both Black Mountain, NC and Asheville, NC offering in person sessions. I am able to do in person or online sessions for Safe and Sound Protocol, Somatic Experiencing, and TRE. Although I always prefer in person sessions myself, both these methods translate exceptionally well via online video calls. This allows people to work from the comfort of their own home, which has its own perks, as well as offer options for those who may need to limit their time seeing others due to Covid. Or you may not live in the area but feel like these modalities would benefit you. Book an online session here.
